International Star Gloria Estefan and husband Emilio address the SWFL area and the Florida Gulfshore Ballet. While they could not attend the Arts Heal event in person, they send their best wishes to the ballet, all guests, and all those largely affected by Hurricane Ian.
On Friday, November 18th, the Florida Gulfshore Ballet presented Arts Heal, a fundraising event for those affected by Hurricane Ian.
The arts illuminate the human condition, bring people together, and provide a crucial vehicle for healing. Disaster recovery includes addressing the emotional and spiritual healing of the community in addition to material necessities such as food and shelter; research shows that arts-based therapies in the aftermath of earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis and other disasters reduce rates of distress, depression and anxiety and increase hope, feelings of well- being and safety, and overall confidence. The arts make recovery more possible, more quickly, for those affected.
In the months and years it will take to rebuild SWFL, we must ensure that the cultural infrastructure is as cared for as the physical needs of these places. These nonprofit cultural organizations and creative workers are the lynchpin to the future vitality of our communities, and they need financial assistance to conduct assessments and develop strategies toward rebuilding their capacity to serve their communities.
Dancers from around the world performed for 1,200 guests, raising over $25,000 (received and distributed by Collier Community Foundation’s Arts Heal Fund and Collaboratory’s Fund for the Arts in Southwest Florida).
From our FGB family to yours, thank you for coming and participating in the Florida Gulfshore Ballet’s Arts Heal event. You have our gratitude.
Letter from Iliana and Franklin
Historically, major hurricanes, fires and floods have affected large portions of the United States, including the recent landfall of Hurricane Ian in SWFL. Florida Gulfshore Ballet expresses its deepest concern for all those impacted by these powerful natural disasters; the devastation to life, property, livelihood and cultural heritage has been, and will be, monumental.
The arts are a vital component of the revitalization of disaster-affected communities.
We at Florida Gulfshore Ballet are committed to the health and vitality of SWFL and remain committed to its recovery at the highest level.
We want to thank all the dancers who have joined us in this monumental effort. We want to thank all the sponsors and everyone who has been working hard to make this special performance happen. Lastly, we want to thank you for joining us, and for your generous donations, which will keep art alive as we rebuild our beloved communities.
In solidarity,
Iliana & Franklin
